Blackheath Football Club has a unique place in the history of Rugby Football being the oldest open rugby club in the world. It was formed by Old Boys of Blackheath Proprietary School in 1858, and is now simply known as The Club a name that has stuck from cheering Up Club by their supporters in matches against the school.
A founder member of the Rugby Union, instigators of the first international match, and hosts for the first ever match against Wales in England, Blackheath was home for several international matches pre Twickenham. The Club still boasts of having more international players than any other club before the advent of professional rugby. Blackheath members formed the Barbarians, the Army RFU and the London Referees Society.
From a prestigious past Blackheath is building for the future with its vibrant Mini, Junior, Youth and Women's sections running alongside the Men's teams. Why not join and be part of it?
The Rectory Field has been the home of Blackheath since January 1883. In 1885 the Football Club were joined by Morden Cricket Club (renamed to Blackheath CC) and also the Blackheath Lawn Tennis Club. A Company called the Blackheath Cricket, Football and Lawn Tennis Co. Ltd. was formed to provide the sports facilities at the Rectory Field, which now also includes Squash. These sports are still thriving today, and new Members are welcome.
