THE SELECTION PROCESS

1. BOOK YOUR TRIAL

  • Go to our player interest form
  • Book a Trial
  • Provide requested details

2. ATTEND TRIAL

  • Demonstrate your technical ability and tactical knowledge
  • All trialist who impress the selectors will be offered a provisional place at the Academy, subject to the education review

3. INTERVIEW

  • One hour education interview with the programme tutor

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

WHO IS IT FOR?
Those aged 16-18 who want to develop their rugby playing ability, gain nationally-recognised qualifications and want a sports-based career.

WHO DELIVERS THE PROGRAMME?
The programme is managed and delivered by Blackheath Academy.

HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAMME
It is a 2-year, full-time education and rugby development programme.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Students will study a BTEC Level 3 Diploma In Sport, with the option for high achieving students to study the Extended Diploma.

All students will complete a sportl coaching qualification.

Students who have yet to achieve a GCSE grade ‘C’ or above in Maths or English will continue to study Functional Skills or GCSE in the required subject(s).

WHERE WILL I STUDY?
You will study at The Academy’s education facilities based at the club. The club has linked with SCL, a further education and work-base training provider, who will be responsible for the management and delivery of the educational element of the Academy. SCL currently works in partnership with many Sixth Form Schools, Further Education Colleges and Rugby and Football Academies in the South of England and have over 10-years of experience successfully delivering vocational and academic sports based qualifications. The SCL team consist of highly qualified and experienced teachers, assessors, verifiers and RFU coach educators.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The programme is fully funded.

Who are the Academy Coaches?

Simon Whatling

Has been a professional rugby player for eleven years playing his trade in the Premiership and Championship as well as gaining international honours in every England age grade. Furthermore Simon was selected for the first ever professional rugby academy in England, as a result he has a vast amount of experience in both Academy and top flight professional rugby. Simon is a RFU Level 2 coach and has experience coaching at a variety of levels.

Aston Croall

Has played Professional Rugby in the premiership for the past 12 seasons scrummaging against some of the best front rowers in the world including the likes of Carl Hayman, Dan Cole and Jason Leonard. Aston has also represented England at all age groups including playing in three different World Cups for the U21’s. Currently a Level 2 coach, Aston has gained experience with Sale FC, Manchester University and is keen to share his wealth of knowledge now.
