A tight match for the most part, but Coventry held the edge on the scoreboard for most of the game, and in the end the greater power of the Championship side’s pack steered them to victory.
A Mark Cooke penalty on 16 minutes opened the scoring, putting Blackheath ahead, but soon after wing Junior Bulumakau and scrum-half Tom Kessell combined down the right flank for a converted try to give the visitors the lead.
Good handling, which Blackheath showed throughout, saw Markus Burcham across, and a lovely line from Craig Dowsett off good line-out ball brought another try for the hosts, but sandwiching the wing’s fine effort, Cov hooker Darren Dawidiuk was driven across twice which, with fly-half Rory Jennings adding a second successful strike at goal, gave the visitors a 19-13 lead at the break.
Blackheath picked up loose ball before going through the phases for Jake Lloyd to score in the corner, but almost immediately the Club spilt possession allowing Jonas Mikalcius to hack forward, the ball sitting up nicely for the left-wing to restore Coventry’s six point advantage.
Prop James Gibbons crashed under the uprights for another Coventry score, and although Jake Lloyd nipped through a gap for his second try as Blackheath again showed good ball retention close the opposition goal-line, a blind-side move from skipper and number-eight Ryan Burrows off a close-range scrum sealed Coventry’s win.
Blackheath’s final pre-season test takes place against Worthing Raiders next Saturday.
Kick-off at Roundstone Lane is 3.00 pm.
