Freddie Gabbitass has re-joined Blackheath for the 2019/20 season.
The fly-half, who had Championship experience with Plymouth Albion, wore Club colours in 2015/16, making 27 appearances and collecting 280 points, but chose to return to Level Two rugby with Richmond.
However, after three seasons with the Surrey club, Freddie has decided to continue his career at Well Hall.
‘It feels like coming home really.’
‘I’m close to some of the boys here and Blackheath’s is always the first result I check. Championship rugby was good for me, and I think I leave Richmond a better player than when I went, but I really enjoyed my time here before and I’m aiming to hold down a regular place in the side.’
‘I know Shanners (James Shanahan) well through England Counties, and as a former fly-half himself, I know I can learn a lot.’
Freddie isn’t the only new recruit at Well Hall.
With the retirement of Geoff Griffiths and Matt Miles, work taking Harry Bate and Anders Nilsson to other parts of the country, and Joe Tarrant heading for Cambridge, Shanners has been busy over the early summer months strengthening the squad, and in particular the pack.
Prop Dan Lamb, who recently toured Romania with the England U20 squad, joins from Nottingham University, while hooker Andy Hamilton arrives from Exeter University.
Tom Burns (Chinnor), Josh Poole (Moseley) and Dan Ireland (South Leicester) all bolster the back-row while Karym Irving (Esher) will add pace out on the wing.
The squad, who have been back in training since 1st July, take a short break before reconvening in early August ahead of three pre-season fixtures prior to the start of the National League One campaign in September.
On Friday 16th August they face Richmond at Well Hall, before playing host again to Coventry on Saturday 24th. The following week they travel to the south coast to take on Worthing, before the season proper begins at home to Chinnor on 7th September.
