Blackheath 2’s (Heathens) 32 – Old Elthamians 2 12
2 x Tom Dowding
1 x Tom Chapman
1 x Dan Hamilton
1 x Ben Dickson
1 x Conor Mitchell
On a cool and blustery day the Heathens welcomed for the first time in the Zoo Shield league our neighbours Old Elthamians to the Rectory Field.
With the Heathens electing to play with a strong wind in their favour it was OE’s who started the brighter of the two sides, having a dominate set piece they began to exert superiority at the scums and made this count when they pieced together some nice phases of play to cross the whitewash for the opening score of the match.
With the half drawing to and end The Heathens started to seize on some OE’s handling errors and some sparkling back play with both wingers Tom Dowding and Tom Chapman touching down to secure some breathing space between the two sides as the half drew to an end – HT 10-5.
To be honest The Heathens certainly up’d the intensity of play during an outstanding second half performance with a pack how starting to provide excellent clean ball for scrum half Tom Trotter to distribute at will to a devastating backline possessing power and sheer pace stripped bear the OE’s defence. Further quality tries soon followed with one by Dan Hamilton that started in his own 22 and after by-passing most of the OE’s would be tacklers with slight of feet and brilliant balance he glided underneath the cross bar for a truly breathtaking try.
Our forwards then helped themselves with a brace of scores, one from No8 Ben Dickson and the second coming from replacement hooker Conor Mitchell.
However OE’s could certainly hold their heads up high as they had the say with a penalty try towards the end of a fantastic match played in difficult conditions.
As special mention must go to our captain Sam Eydmann who delivered a masterclass in defence, using wonderful cutout passses and leading from the front all game, however we won’t be calling on his conversion skills anytime soon missing from right in front of the posts(!!)…. a minor blemish on what was a Man of the Match performance from Sam.
Next Saturday we are away to Esher.
