It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of Clive Jones, aged 81.
Clive was a Blackheath player and supporter who attended City of London School and learnt his rugby in the Army. Clive and his twin brother Colin, both prop forwards in the same team, were known as “The Book Ends” and in the mid-1960s their names, along with others from the Blackheath ‘A’ team of 1964-1965, were engraved on an aluminium beer jug which still lives behind the Club bar.
After leaving Blackheath they joined their school Old Boys side, Old Citizens RFC, but remained regular props for Annie Metcalfe’s XV which had an annual fixture with the Blackheath Golden Oldies during the 1980s. Annie’s husband, John, was a Club 1st XV player as well as being an old boy of City of London School.
Clive rejoined The Club in 1995 and, in spite of recent health issues, became a regular and stoically determined supporter until the season was suspended in the lockdown earlier this year. His twin Colin died several years ago.
We send our condolences to Clive’s children, Vanessa and Simon, their families and Clive’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.
