More Than Just Beer Money!
Clubs innovative initiative written up in The Times
Patrick Kidd, a long time Club supporter has included a write up of our innovative initiative in his column in The Times. The full text of what he wrote is reproduced below for those who do not subscribe to the newspaper.
More than just beer money
The premature end of the rugby season below the Premiership will have a grave consequence for clubs, though the RFU plans to provide some aid. At Blackheath, for instance, the takings from the last two home matches were earmarked for summer maintenance work, essential after the immensely wet winter. Having moved a few years ago from Rectory Field, their home since 1883, because bar takings had to be shared with the cricket, tennis and squash clubs that co-owned the ground, they find that 100 per cent of zero does not buy much grass seed.
Sensibly, though, the club are raising funds by encouraging supporters to buy vouchers that can be redeemed for beer next season. We should all help, if we can afford it, those places that give us such joy the rest of the year. I bought two jugs of IPA yesterday and I shall look forward all the more to drinking them in September.
Such is the reaction to the initiative and Patricks write up, it looks as though other rugby clubs will follow suit. We hope they have every success in these difficult times
