Six Blackheath players will make up part of the 22-man Kent squad tomorrow, as the county host Devon at Medway RFC in Rochester, in the final round of pool matches in Division Two of the 2016 Bill Beaumont Cup.
Tom Stradwick will captain the side, and Terry Read, Dan Hamilton, Freddie Gabbitass, Josh Hawkins and Jack Walsh will also feature, as Kent bid to reach the climax of this year’s competition.
The opening round saw a 43-28 victory at Canterbury RFC, but the narrow 26-22 loss at Taunton against Somerset last week leaves Kent four points behind their opponents tomorrow in the South Pool table.
Nevertheless, a big win tomorrow may still be enough to gain Kent promotion to Division One as well as sending them to Twickenham on Sunday 29th May to challenge for the County Championship Plate they won in such style two years ago.
‘Things didn’t go our way at Taunton and that’s obviously disappointing,’ said Kent coach John Gallagher, who captained Blackheath in the late 1990s (as well as being known a few other achievements!).
‘But the losing bonus point was crucial and keeps us in the hunt. We know what we have to do, which is score four tries and deny Devon anything. That’s the challenge and we’re up for it.’
Kent against Devon tomorrow is at Medway RFC, Priestfields Recreation Ground, Priestfields, Rochester (ME1 3AD). Kick-off is at 3.00 pm.
