Men’s Section – More than a Game

Friday evening saw the men’s social section out at Blackheath Halls for a production of Grease.

The unusual sight of 30 players and partners at a musical was in support of Alex Laurenti, theatre student and player for the section.

Laurenti stars as Danny Zuccho in Grease

Laurenti, a former Leicester Tigers academy player, won the newcomer of the year award in the 2024/5 season. The darting halfback was a menace to teams across the league, scoring 7 tries in the process.

Laurenti says: “Rugby and the theatre are two parts of my life that I never ever thought would mix. In the past my theatre colleagues would have no interest in the rugby and my teammates at rugby would take little interest in my theatrical endeavours. It was therefore a truly surreal and special moment for me to have the team come and watch last night and (from what I can gather) they thoroughly enjoyed it! It just goes to show what the club is all about; supporting each other no matter the circumstances. It genuinely makes you feel part of a family rather than simply a rugby team.”

Meeting with members after the show

Laurenti joined the club at the start of last season – “I wanted to get back into rugby in September when I started my second year at drama school so I did some research on local rugby clubs and Blackheath was the first I came across. Finding out it was the oldest ever rugby club was an added bonus so I went down for a training session and was immediately hooked by the level of play and the brilliant atmosphere amongst the squad. Now a whole season later I can honestly say it was the best decision I could’ve possibly made.”

Alex Laurenti is a great example of the ethos of the social section of having a place for everyone. While our focus is playing quality and enjoyable rugby, we take pride in having members from all walks of life that we can celebrate and support.

The Section looks forward to seeing more from Alex in the future – on the field and on the stage.
