Welcome to our new President and Chairman

At the Blackheath Rugby AGM on 4 July 2023, Dr Alan Thompson announced his retirement as President of Blackheath FC and introduced his successor, Rory O’Sullivan, who previously held the position of Chairman. Rory joined the club as a Colt, has played in every men’s club side (captaining a number of teams) and has also coached through the Minis and Juniors age groups. Rory is humbled to be asked to take the role as President and says “It is truly an honour to succeed so many distinguished Club Presidents and I will do my upmost to follow their example and be a true servant of the Club. I would like to thank Dr Alan Thompson for his tireless dedication and commitment during his past five years in this role. Blackheath aims to be the most exciting and inclusive Community rugby club promoting rugby excellence, enjoyment and friendship. We have an exciting season ahead both on and off the field so please get behind us and support the Club in any way you can.  Look forward to seeing you all soon – One Club, One Family”.

With Rory moving roles in the club, the attendees of the AGM were asked to vote on a new Chairman, and this honour was given to James Fleming, a unanimous decision by the membership. James watched his first Club game in 1978 and has been part of the club since then, coaching the Minis and Juniors and, more recently, stepping into the role of Commercial Director. James has also been heavily involved in the work to purchase the leasehold of Well Hall, including the successful application for the community grant. James says “I am delighted and honoured to be elected as Chairman of this historic and prestigious club. With promotion to National One, we have an exciting year ahead for our first team and we look forward to welcoming some big names back to Well Hall including our old friends and London rivals, Richmond and Rosslyn Park. As a Community rugby club, we have plenty to focus on across all sections of the club and of course, we are very advanced in our plans to acquire the freehold of Well Hall. I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on the Executive Committee and helping Blackheath Rugby to continue to grow and develop in the years ahead.”

We thank Alan for his dedication as President over the last five years (he will continue to sit on the Executive Committee as Immediate Past President), and we wish James and Rory every success in their new roles.
