Richard Brinsley Sheridan: 3 Dec 1945-12 Aug 2023

The President is sad to report that we have lost one of our rugby family.

A loyal servant to his country, with 9 years as an officer in the Royal Artillery followed by 22 years in the Metropolitan Police, Richard loved the Club and was hooked at his first game against Orrell at the Rectory Field ca. 1987. He was always willing to help out where he could make a difference, and soon was asked to join the General Committee. At one stage he ran the 3rd, 4th and 5th teams and was in charge of looking after the sponsors on match days, not to mention organising lunches at Well Hall.

Richard became a Life Member in 1995 and more recently was thrilled to be made a Vice President for his services and commitment to the Club. His favourite season though was 22/23 with the Club winning National 2 East and making every game home and away – he is pictured here at Guernsey, with his son, Mark.

He got so much enjoyment watching the lads week-in week-out and sponsoring Harry Holland, who became a friend. No-one was happier to hear about the opportunity for Blackheath to own its own ground after all this time. Richard, we know you’ll be watching the games from your seat at the top of the open stand and we will miss your cry of ‘Don’t Panic Mr Mainwaring’ as the oppo full back hesitates over the high ball! Rest in peace.

Richard’s funeral service will be held at the Eltham Crematorium, Crown Woods Way, London SE9 2AZ on Wednesday 6th September at 11am and afterwards at the Club at Well Hall from 12.15pm.

Family flowers only but donations to Leukaemia UK can be made to support this charity, one that is close to the Sheridan family’s heart (https://www.leukaemiauk.org.uk).
