Men’s Section – Season Preview

The men’s section is gearing up for a huge 2025/26 season. With two league teams taking the field, we asked section captain Kai Roper-Blackman for his thoughts on the competition coming up.

How are you feeling about the 2025/26 season?

“I’m incredibly excited for the season ahead. We have the largest squad we’ve had in many years, with a huge amount of strength and depth across all positions. We have had several new joiners during the off season and they have already settled in during our summer touch sessions. There’s a real sense of unity and belief within the group which we will carry forward into the season.”

What teams in the leagues are you keeping an eye on?

“OE’s 2’s are a team to lookout for in Kent Counties 5. Like us, they have been rebuilding over the last few years and gave us a competitive match last season resulting in a 36 – 20 win. In the Kent Metropolitan league, Beckenham 4’s have historically been a tough opponent. They play a physical, forward dominated game with emphasis on the breakdowns and strong carries around it.”

What fixtures are you looking forward to?

“The double header at home on Jan 17th where we take on Southwark 2s and Edenbridge is a big day for the men section as we field two teams at the club.”

What does support from the club mean to you and the players on the pitch?

“The support from the club means everything. Having a passionate crowd behind us lifts the entire squad and brings out the best in everyone, especially in the big moments. We encourage friends, family, and anyone from the club to come to our games—your presence truly makes a difference!”

Which players in the section are you keen to see this season and why?

“I could list so many players to watch this season but a few players really standout.

Ollie Acton stands out for his powerful carrying abilities and versatility in the scrum. He often breaks the gain line and makes big tackles to shift momentum. Zeki Bhuee is an up and coming player in the pack, known for his impressive work rate and ability to soak up knowledge from his team mates. He has only played one season of rugby but is already making his presence known within the team.

In the backs, Alex Laurenti poses a constant threat. He looks to snipe around the breakdown and always finds himself with the ball for quick tap penalties. In the centres Alex Omeyer. Alex is an experienced centre with impressive strength and speed that has seen him run in several game defining tries last season.”

Lastly, what does captaining these boys mean to you?

“Captaining any team is always a privilege, but having the opportunity to lead such a close-knit group of players has been the highlight of my rugby playing career. I’m thoroughly looking forward to the season ahead and celebrating the achievements of the men’s section in years to come”

The section teams for the season will be the Brigands, playing in Counties 5, and the Bandits, playing in Kent Metropolitan A.

Note: the home fixture vs Westcombe Park on 10 Jan will be rescheduled.
