Barnes 2s 35-19 Club XV

Date: October 4th 2025

Venue: Barnes Rugby Club

After a promising start playing against the elements, Blackheath scored first on 13 minutes through Leo Jowett following a succession of good attacking phases and some excellent passing. The very strong gusting wind which Blackheath were playing into caused havoc at the lineout and it was to their credit that both hookers were only called not-straight on a couple of occasions.

Blackheath, after that early score, were to only occasionally threaten the Barnes line for the remainder of the half but looked pretty comfortable in defence. They held out until the 30th minute when a succession of drives from a good lineout saw Barnes tighthead prop cross the whitewash for a converted try which was quickly followed by their second converted try which whilst well taken by their number 8, owed much to a couple of missed tackles from Blackheath.

Although Blackheath might have scored a second try just before the break they would have gone to the dressing room at half time buoyed by the fact that they had competed really well in difficult conditions and against the elements.

HT: Barnes 14-5 Club XV

The story of the second half was really of Blackheath not playing with the conditions they now had in their favour. A converted try from Barnes following two missed tackles came within 5 minutes of the restart making the score 21-5. Captain Nathaniel Ticehurst scored the first of a brace on 55 minutes crashing over following a tapped penalty. James Bush added the extras to cut the deficit to 9 points but just when it was thought that Blackheath could have it in them to get right back in the game they conceded two further scores to trail 35-12. Nathaniel Ticehurst scored a consolation try towards the end to make the final score 35-19 but it really was only a consolation as Barnes took all the spoils including 5 league bonus points.

This was a poor second half by Blackheath and disappointing given their massive effort in the first half when the conditions were very much against them. Fair play to Barnes who played the conditions very well and for the most part looked a cohesive unit. Blackheath will have the opportunity to settle a score after Christmas at The Utilita.
