Celebrating Brett’s bicentenary

Yesterday may have been mostly about our promotion to the Champ, and more of that in days to come. But we were also able to celebrate an enormous achievement by an absolute club legend: Desmond Brett.

Des first ran out in Club colours in January 2004, playing Dings Crusaders, and his last 1st XV game was away to DMP on 27 February 2016. By that time he had amassed 263 caps.

When Markus Burcham was asked to name the best XV he’s played with or against, Des was his tight-head prop (https://blackheathrugby.co.uk/burchams-top-xv/). Des was also in the ‘team of the decade’, chosen in 2020 by both the exec and the supporters.

Des moved away from the area a few years ago, but he still enjoys playing rugby for Southwold, and was part of the cup winning squad against Stowmarket last weekend, scoring a try, to help his team win 34-33.

It was fantastic to see Des yesterday, supporting the club at the RAG in their successful bid for promotion, and it was the ideal opportunity for Tom Stradwick, Head Coach, to present his commemorative cap (watch the presentation on our instagram account). A momentous occasion for a momentous achievement.

He may not spend much time in southeast London now, but Des will always be an important part of the Blackheath Rugby family, and he is always welcome at Well Hall.
