The men’s section went from two fixtures to one last Saturday, as an injury crisis at Old Elthamians left the Brigands with a walk over.
It was left to the Bandits to head to Beccahamians.
There is something about playing a Blackheath team that makes opponents in this league step up a gear, and Beccs certainly fit that mould. The encounter was highly physical, leaving the Bandits with several injuries. This included player of the day Zac Lillis, whose aggression in attack helped the team develop a lead going into the half time break.
The second half proved to be even tougher, with the hosts chipping away at the Bandits’ lead. Handling for both teams declined, and both front rows could be heard cursing backs all over the pitch. The last quarter saw the Bandits a man down and under assault across the park. Gritty defence and dogged breakdown work kept Beccs out, and the game ended 22-29.
The Brigands are back in action this weekend, traveling to Sheppey. The Bandits have a rest weekend.
