Blackheath Club XV 26-10 Richmond Saxons

Match report by Craig Molloy

Having just come up short in an excellent game against Ampthill last Saturday, the Club XV were determined to get back to winning ways. Following a respectful two minute silence in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in two World Wars and other conflicts, Blackheath started as they had last week with a sustained period of pressure and, on 5 minutes, good ball from the pack resulted in a slick backs move, nicely finished in the corner by number 11 James Rust with Oli Burgess adding the conversion from wide out.

In near perfect conditions, Blackheath completely dominated the first half with our forwards dominant in every aspect of the game. Ben Charnock playing at 8 was exploiting the space created by our dominant pack and scored a fine try on 15 minutes converted well by fly-half Chris Bell. What followed on 25 minutes was a fantastic breakaway try from Charnock. Taking the ball from broken play just outside of our 22-metre line he beat 3 defenders before powering away to score the try of the match in the corner. A superb try by the man of the match. The conversion was missed and so were a couple of further opportunities where we should have extended the lead beyond the half-time score of 19-0.

You had the sense that had we stuck to the game plan we could have pulled out of sight, but some poor decision making, and a succession of missed tackles allowed Richmond back into the game with two good tries both unconverted. At 19-10 you really wondered what might happen if we didn’t regroup and, for the last quarter, we started to exert the pressure that had seen us in such control in the first half. Blackheath sealed the bonus point win on the 65th minute with a nice try by Chris Bell finishing a great move started by a fine break from George Daly who fed debutant Cam Squire who released a lovely pass for Belly to finish and add the extras too.

A really good win, and in most parts a good performance by the Club XV who welcome Dorking 2’s to The Utilita on Saturday 18th November. Kick off is at 2:15 on pitch one so if you are not travelling to Birmingham Mosely do come along, take a seat in the stands, and support the team.
