Tomorrow, Tom Baldwin will run out onto The Utilita pitch for his 150th appearance in Club colours.
Tom’s first game for Blackheath Rugby was away, against Blaydon, on 5 September 2015, when he was one of six debutants in the starting pack. Apart from a season at London Scottish, he’s been a regular in the squad since that first match. Indeed, in 2020 he was voted No. 6 ‘Player of the Decade’, both by the Exec and by our Supporters. Moving to his now more familiar position of No. 8 on his return to Blackheath in 2022, Tom has shown his qualities in both on and off the pitch, and last season he was presented with the Players’, Coaches’ and Supporters’ Player of the Year awards. In September this year became the Blackheath Rugby Club Captain.
James Shanahan, Director of Rugby, says “Tom is a leader on and off the field and is always one of the best players on the pitch. When he talks lads listen, and that shows the respect he has in the group. It’s a great achievement to get 150 and sure he’ll chase down 200. We are very lucky that a number of lads in my time have hit great achievements like this.”
Speaking about Tom, Russell Ticehurst Managing Director, goes on to say “Tom has always been one of our more consistent quality players — he leads by example every week and I know today will be no different. We all congratulate him on his 150th cap, and urge him on to secure a home win to celebrate the occasion!”
We do, indeed, congratulate Tom on his sesquicentenary and hope he enjoys the game tomorrow (and, of course, the celebrations that follow!).
