From Richardson’s Field to Well Hall: A Legacy Continued
Blackheath Rugby is delighted to announce a deeply meaningful addition to our grounds management team at Well Hall—a brand-new, top-of-the-range cylinder mower from Allett Mowers. This essential piece of equipment has been funded entirely by a generous legacy left to the Club from the estate of the late Dawn Richardson.
As a lifelong member, Dawn was a familiar face and a passionate supporter who followed the club’s fortunes with unwavering interest. Crucially, she was also the last direct descendant of Guildford Barker Richardson—the man who shaped the very foundation of our club’s home ground history.
Back in 1877, watching Blackheath play on the public Heath had become a chaotic and boisterous affair, with crowds frequently spilling onto the pitch. Recognizing the urgent need for a controlled, private space, Guildford Barker Richardson stepped forward to lease his private grazing land on the north side of Old Dover Road to the Club for a nominal rent of just £10 a year. Known affectionately as “Richardson’s Field,” this hallowed ground became our first enclosed home and hosted legendary milestones, including the world’s first-ever international rugby match between England and Wales in 1881.
Fast forward nearly 150 years, and that generational devotion to our playing surface lives on. Following our historic purchase of the freehold at Well Hall, ensuring our pitches remain in world-class condition is more important than ever. It is incredibly poetic that Dawn’s final act of generosity will be used to protect and perfect our playing surface. Just as her great-grandfather provided the club with its very first dedicated pitch, Dawn’s legacy ensures our new home at Well Hall will be meticulously nurtured for future generations of players and supporters.
We extend our deepest, enduring gratitude to the Richardson family. Their name remains permanently woven into the turf of Blackheath Rugby.
