U12s Cowboy Tour to Newark

The end of the season came in the form of a Wild West themed rugby tour to Newark for our U12s.

Meeting bright & early on Saturday morning, they boarded the fun bus to a jam packed weekend. Fuelled by a McDonald’s breakfast pit stop, the team arrived at Stapleford Woods ready for bush crafting shenanigans with local company ‘A Little Bit Wilder’. Under the watchful eye of owner Nick Exley, they whittled, used knives and axes to prepare kindling, started fires, lazed in hammocks & played hide and seek, all before a delicious lunch of chilli & rice in the woods. The only thing left was to toast marshmallows for smores.

The evening entertainment came in the shape of a local pub who kept the crowd fed & watered, interspersed with some dancing & an impressive amount of karaoke from both the boys & their parents!

Alas, we woke on Sunday to torrential rain & near freezing temperatures to prep for our visit to Newark RFC. Two matches were played against our hosts, with one team securing a 5-10 victory and the other holding the host to a 25-25 draw. Newark hospitality prevailed & the boys enjoyed hots dogs in the bar afterwards.

The opportunity was taken to give out end of season awards – congratulations to this seasons winners:

  • Most improved – Rafi
  • Warrior of the season – Gregor
  • Team player of the season – Simmo
  • Magic moment – Dexter
  • Best tourist – Marijonas
  • Players’ player – Jameson

You might expect the journey home to be a more subdued affair after such a busy weekend, but no, instead we were treated to a rather spectacular rendition of ‘Reach for the Stars’ by coach Steve.

Watch a quick round up of the tour here!

A huge shout out to a wonderful group of boys who have had a spectacular first season in the juniors – we’re already looking forward to U13s.
