New Captain announced for Blackheath’s 1st XV

13 Jul 2021

We are delighted to announce that Ed Taylor  has been selected as Captain for the coming season.

With the new 2021/22 season upon us we have been discussing, reviewing and considering who would take over from Markus Burcham as Captain of Blackheath 1st XV.
It was already a difficult task but then a couple of players that were in the frame were snapped up by Championship sides and the decision became rather more straight forward.

Having Captained Loughborough University, England U18’s, U19’s and had spells at Worcester, Rotherham and Bedford we felt that Ed Taylor had exactly the right qualities we were seeking in our 1st XV Captain. When I spoke to Ed about our decision he responded in the manner we could only have hoped for; he was honoured, very grateful and more importantly hugely humbled about the opportunity.

Now all that remains is for Ed to put on the Club black and red shirt and lead us into what promises to be an intriguing season, starting 4th September 2021 at home to our friends from Cinderford. We look forward to seeing as many of you down at Well Hall as possible, now we can welcome everyone back.”

Come on Club.

Ed Taylor Bio

Ed began his junior rugby at Bridgnorth Rugby Club in Shropshire before moving on to Old Swinford Hospital School where he captained the team to the Daily Mail Cup final.

In his final year at school, he represented England U19s, captained England U18s Clubs & Schools and Worcester Warrior’s U18s.

After leaving school, Ed joined Worcester and had a spell at Rotherham Titans on loan. He then decided to take a sabbatical from full time rugby and went to study Geography with Economics at Loughborough University. While there, he earned over 75 National 1 caps and Captained the National 1 team in his final year.

Ed graduated with a 1st from Loughborough and was offered a professional contract at Bedford Blues where he represented the club over 85 times in 4 years and in addition, captained the team on a number of occasions.

During his first year at Bedford he completed a MSC in International Real Estate at UCL and was employed in a part time role for a national developer and land trader with whom he now works for full time.

He joined ‘Club’ in the summer 2020, but unfortunately hasn’t had the pleasure of playing yet due to COVID.

Ed says ”I am extremely excited to get started and I am absolutely honoured to be named Captain of Blackheath’s 1st XV. It is such a prestigious club with a great heart and I am looking forward to getting the boys together and developing as a team, with our eyes firmly on the prize of promotion to the Championship at the end of the season”
