Blackheath v Gentlemen of Aspen

Friday 22nd August sees the men’s section in action for the first time this season, kicking off a weekend of rugby at the Utilita.

The section is taking the field against the Gentlemen of Aspen, in the first game of their four match tour of England, Wales and Ireland.

This is not the first time a Blackheath team has hosted the Gents – a previous tour visited the club in the mid 90s.

Recalling this encounter, Nick Probert, who played on the occasion, recounts a “freezing winters night. Club players arrived in overcoats and scarves to see the opposition walking around in T-shirts”.

This edition promises quite the opposite, with a sunny Friday evening in the mid-low 20s forecast.

The tourists won that game – “They played a fast open game, which wasn’t really our style” recalls Probert “and unusually vs a touring side I think we also lost the drinking”.

The Blackheath team is shaping up strongly for what will be their first hit out of the pre-season. Key players like skipper Kai Roper-Blackman, Alex Laurenti and Cameron Squire will be on show. With a generous bench available, expect to see a range of other familiar faces.

The Gentlemen of Aspen will provide a challenging opposition, following a strong home season.

Post match the section is looking forward to extending the club’s hospitality to the Gents before they continue on to games in Wales and Ireland.

Club members and supporters are invited to join in the celebration of rugby and community, with kick off planned for 7:30.
