Blackheath and the British and Irish Lions!

Blackheath Rugby was honoured to be visited recently by representatives of Howden, the insurance broker who are sponsoring the British and Irish Lions on their tour to Australia. As part of their sponsorship of the tour, Howden is honouring those rugby clubs who have produced players who have represented the Lions in any of their matches played since the first tour in 1888.

The Howden representatives presented Blackheath Rugby with a plaque and a memorial board containing a list of Lions players produced and nurtured by Blackheath. With the illustrious rugby history of the Club, it is great to record that it contains many names, 43 in fact, which is a significant contribution from one club. Lions players are given a number, unique to them, and a review of the memorial board shows just how many Blackheath players were selected for the Lions in the early years of the Lions history.

The memorial board will be hung in the club house and in the meantime, Blackheath Rugby wishes the current generation of Lions players every success in their forthcoming series against Australia, starting in Brisbane this weekend, where several club members will be in attendance to support the team in pursuit of victory.
