London Welsh Druids 5-43 Club XV
September 13th 2025
Venue: Old Deer Park, Kew
Following a morning of heavy rain and howling wind, this game kicked off in lovely sunny conditions at Old Deer Park, a ground we have not visited for many years,
Welsh started much the better going through numerous phases and hammering on our door repeatedly for a good 8 minutes. Only good Club defence kept the scores level before an immaculate line out take on the Welsh 22 metre line resulted in a try from second row Tom Johnson duly converted by Matt Dalrymple. It didn’t take long before Club had a second try, this following a good move by the backs and a sniping run from number 9, Charlie Briers, which was again converted with ease by Matt Dalrymple.
Club were now enjoying plentiful possession and looked dangerous in attack with forwards and backs combining well. The lineout was working like a dream with Johnson dominant in the second row and our back row led superbly by William Jameson quick to the breakdown and massive in defence. The pack overall were untroubled at set piece time by a much bigger Welsh outfit.
A slick move involving the club centres sent wing Leo Jowett through for an excellent try in the corner which was well converted by Dalrymple. Welsh stuck at it but Blackheath always had too much in the tank and stretched the host defence time and again. We had a bonus point in the bag before half time with another fine converted try from scrum half Briers to bring the score at half time to 0-28.
The second half started as the first half ended with plenty of possession for the visitors and great defence from the hosts who continued to plug away and enjoyed some good periods of possession themselves. It was Blackheath though who scored first in the second period through second-row Tom Johnson, who was having a strong game.
Some good possession from Welsh eventually resulted in a try for the home side but that remained their only score in the game as Club pressed home their dominance with two further tries including a hat-trick try from Johnson and a good effort from Ben Charnock.
A game that started in bright sunshine ended in bright sunshine but not before a downpour of epic proportions failed to dampen Blackheath’s spirits. An excellent bonus point win on the road in their first league game of the season for the Club XV with plenty more to come from this young side.
Dorking are next up at home on the 20th September with a 14:00 KO so if you are not going to watch the first team at Leicester do get along to support the boys at home. The bar will be open.
