Blackheath rugby offers its sympathies to the family, in particular his daughter Jessica, and friends of John (JBK) Williams, who died on 10 May 2025.
Born on 4 June 1943, John was educated at Milton Abbey school in Dorset from 1957-1962. He was an excellent all round sportsman, but excelling at both cricket and hockey (where he represented the school) meant that rugby initially took second place.
After leaving school and joining Blackheath, John’s interest in rugby developed — he was the epitome of a ‘one club man’, playing for all Club teams during his rugby career and captaining The Heathens in 1974/5.
John never lost his interest in other sports and he was also a highly accomplished cricketer at Blackheath CC, where he kept wicket to quality bowlers including James Melville (who also played for Kent) and Alan Knott (before Knotty took up the gloves at Kent and went on to win 95 caps for England).
Along with Peter Piper he was instrumental in founding the Golden Oldies. John’s company produced the small statuettes of Peter Piper which were given to guests at a party to celebrate Peter’s 80th birthday, and also made the old looking pub sign that hangs in the bar at the Utilita.
John’s funeral is on Monday 9th June at 11.30am. Kent and Sussex Crematorium, TN2 5JJ and will be followed by a reception at The Nevill Crest and Gun, TN3 9JR.
