Blackheath Rugby is very sad to report that Richard Dinkeldein, longstanding Club member and volunteer at our Hervey Road ground, died very suddenly on Thursday 14th August at the age of 80.
Richard was one of the founders of the Blackheath Mini-Rugby Section in 1988. He was the Treasurer of the Friends of Hervey Road Playing Fields, a group that was previously called Save Hervey Road Playing Fields. This group were instrumental in preserving the fields, which were once earmarked to be the location for the rebuilding of a school from Plumstead. The group were also heavily involved in securing funding for the renovation of Hervey Road Playing Fields.
Richard has been a hard-working volunteer at Hervey Road every week for past 5 years since Blackheath Rugby took it over and, in fact, had completed a volunteer morning the day before his untimely death.
Richard was nominated in 2023 to become a Vice President of Blackheath Rugby. In typically modest way, he declined this honour, saying that he didn’t feel that he had contributed enough to the Club.
Richard was a keen golfer – a member of Royal Blackheath Golf Club – and also skied every year.
We send our condolences to his wife Meg and to all his family.
His funeral is taking place at midday on Friday 12th September at St Margaret’s Church, Lee Terrace, Blackheath, SE13 5DL.
Dr Alan Thompson
Immediate Past President
